The McKinsey Solve in the 2026–27 Recruiting Timeline
Written by Tom Prescott, founder of SolvePrep. Last updated: September 2, 2026.
The single most common timing surprise in McKinsey recruiting: how little warning you get before the Solve. Applications open, you submit, and the assessment invitation typically lands days to a couple of weeks later. Most candidates then have about seven days to complete the assessment from the invite email. A minority report up to two weeks, but that is the exception. The invite includes a self-scheduling link — mainly so McKinsey can spread server load — and last-minute slots are usually available. We still recommend picking a fixed time as soon as you see the email: it removes the psychological option to delay and protects the hours you need for real practice.
The typical cycle at a glance (US full-time & internships)
Timing varies by office, school, and program — treat these as the common pattern, not promises:
- Late summer–September: full-time applications open for most US offices; target-school deadlines cluster in September–October. That said, you can apply whenever the roles are live on McKinsey's career site — the window does not fully close on a fixed date.
- Days–2 weeks post-application: Solve invitations arrive for most candidates who pass resume screening.
- About 7 days after invite: typical completion deadline (some report up to two weeks). Use the self-scheduling link in the invite to lock in a slot.
- Autumn: interview rounds for those who clear the screen.
- Winter–spring: internship cycles run later, with the same application → invite → deadline rhythm compressed.
What this means for preparation
The trap is treating the invite as the starting gun. By invite day you may have as little as a week — and candidates who pass report an average of 8 full practice runs. The candidates in the least stress are the ones who ran the games BEFORE applying — a free run of each game — the invite then changes nothing except the date.
FAQs
How long after applying do you get the Solve?
Commonly days to about two weeks after submission, if your resume clears screening — though timing varies by office and cycle stage.
How long do you get to complete it?
Most candidates get about seven days from the invitation email. A minority report up to two weeks. The invite contains a self-scheduling link so you can pick a slot — usually even last minute — but we recommend choosing a time immediately so you commit to the prep window. The exact deadline in your invite email governs, not any general guidance.
Does the timeline differ for internships?
The rhythm is the same; the calendar shifts to the winter–spring window for most US internship cycles.
